Listening to your neighbor's noise is a major irritant, especially when it goes on for prolonged periods of time. There are many noises most people can put up with. If your neighbor is mowing the lawn it is easy to tolerate because it will be for a limited amount of time.

Depending upon the source of the noise there are some things that can be done. Insulating yourself from the sound of the noise can be accomplished in several ways. Likewise, if you are the cause of the noise, there are things that can be done to reduce it.

1. Add rugs and carpets to your floor. Even if you have a carpet, a large thick rug will go a long way to reducing the noise level.
2. Re-arrange furniture to add a cushion between you and a noise from the next room.
3. Change from blinds or light weight curtains to a heavy weight curtain.
4. Install double glazed windows.
5. Soundproof your doors.
6. Use a 'white noise' machine.
7. Buy mufflers for your garden equipment - or do the work by hand.
8. Plant trees and bushes between you and the noise.

Noise Pollution: A Life Saver Or An Annoyance?

Noise pollution for some people is a life saver for others. Whoever said you can not please all of the people all of the time but you can please some of the people some of the time was spot on.

Have you noticed the number of pedestrian traffic lights that now beep loudly to let the pedestrian know it is safe to cross? While this is a life saver for someone who is blind, it is annoying to those of us who are not.

Many SUVs and small trucks are equipped with reverse warning alerts: when the vehicles engages the reverse gear a loud intermittent beeping is emitted. For the person who may be in the path of the reversing vehicle, this warning sound is vital to their safety: live in a cul-de-sac or next door to someone who reverses out of their drive all the time and it is a nightmare.

The debate about reducing noise pollution is a tricky one. There are no easy solutions to reducing many of the noises in our neighborhoods.

Noise Pollution: What Is It?

Noise Pollution: What Is It?

Noise pollution can be defined as any environmental noise that is distracting, harmful, or annoying. Anything can be the cause of the noise, garden machines, planes, cars, trucks, industrial machines, even trains.

A noise becomes polluting at the point that it becomes a problem. For most of us, the sound of a plane is not a distraction or annoyance; however, live under the flight path of a major airport and the constant drone of planes can be like a toothache that never goes away.

Many States have laws and by-laws that regulate the amount of noise that is acceptable, and, the time frame that the noise can be made. During the weekday, noise can be made from as early as 6:00 am and as late as 9:00 pm in some jurisdictions. The weekends though are different. That is when we are supposed to have an extra hour or so in bed, and sit out at night in summer months without the sound of other people's noise cutting through the evening breeze.

If you think you are going to do something that will cause a noise and potentially disturb your neighbors, check your local by-laws to make sure you are not breaking the law. Once you have done that, go and talk with your neighbors and let them know what your plans are, when the noise might occur, and, how long it will be happening.

Most people are OK when they know the noise is temporary.

Cut The Noise, Buy A Rotary Mower

Noise pollution is enough to drive anyone crazy. In the summer, the sound of all the garden tools in my neighborhood is deafening. It would be great if my neighbors ditched their gas an electric lawnmowers and picked up a hand pushed rotary mower. These lawnmowers look like the ones our grandparents used, but that is the only similarity.

The new hand pushed lawnmowers are lighter and easy to handle. Not only are they great for your health, they tone down the noise in the neighborhood significantly. You can buy the rotary lawnmowers at places like The Home Depot and Lowes. You can even find an antique at a garage sale.

If you don't mind a bit more exercise, an antique mower is just as good as a new one when it comes to cutting capability. You can set the height of cut on both. The real beauty of these mowers is that they make you get some exercise. It's is one's own brute strength that pushes them back and forth across the lawn. They will save on gas bills, air pollution, and most definitely keep the weekend gardening noise down.
